This novel truly depicts how it feels to live under war. The story is narrated in such a beautiful way that reader feels the pain in heart. Mariam's innocent childhood and all the traumas she went through. It feels as the reading itself is going through all these difficult times. This novel depicts true struggle a woman does under patriarchial society. How it feels when a woman is deprived of basic human rights. The life lesson i got from this novel is, life goes on. No matter what you are going through but life goes on. One cannot necessarily live the life as he/she imagined. Life is so much merciless that you have to chose which path is less worse. From delicate little girl ''Laila'' to mature, stiffened women, that Laila become, after going through so much hardships, made me cry. Life is cruel.
