Some of these things were minor annoyances but collectively make the game unenjoyable for me.
1. All the profiles on a switch play on the same island. At first this sounded interesting and it felt like our house would have its own community. What makes this annoying is that you are on an island with finite daily resources so if my wife plays before me she could take most of the resources on our island. Granted I could spend points to go to a random island to get resources but then I could not use those points for other things. I could not imagine playing on an island with kids and sharing those resources further. Overall this was a minor annoyance.
2. This First person to play the game is the most important profile and can impact the progression of everyone else playing. This person becomes the island representative and they get assigned objectives that lead to island growth. I let my wife play first and I found my self waiting her to build some building for the game to unlock something new. My profile can only do the side objectives. It felt like the idea of there being two people playing the game one the same switch was an after thought. To truly enjoy this game everyone needs their own copy of the game and their own switch. Which am sure is a money grabbing attempt from Nintendo.
3. Most craftable items are just decorative. In games like the sims, minecraft, and Stardew Valley you had decorative items but also a lot of items the are functional. Like a stove to cook food or a bike to make you travel faster. In animal crossing I made a bike and a stove and they just sit there and I can use them. It makes crafting kind of boring because you don't create something useful. If you like interior design apps you might like this game. The difference is that you will have to gather resources and have to discover recipe to make the item or find it in the limited shop.
4. Social media seems to be a big part of this game. If someone is your friend on the switch you still have to friend them in animal crossing. It is independent of your switch friends. The best way to find friends is to get on social media or forums and trade. This would not be so annoying if switch had a mic built into the console. Instead I found myself having to type everything out. What made it more annoying is that my wife did not have switch online for her account. So the person who had the most important role could not do online trading which is the best way to get resources and recipes. So basically you will have the most fun if you have your own switch, game, and online subscription. If you are going to force us to share an island then this island should have a shared subscription.
5.Multiplayer is not that fun. Couch co -op is in the game, but to play it you need to have a profile and a character made on the island. For couch co-op the second player is forced to follow the first player and can not keep any resources. Online you can't do things like move decorations while someone is visiting your island. Online players can keep the resources they take from. Your island.
6.Lack of goals. It wants to be like minecraft in this aspect and wants you to choose your own path. Minecraft is massive with so much to explore and learn animal crossing is small and most island feel the same. You can also explore with crafting in minecraft because things you build do something.
