So before I start I will preface that have read the book several times, and rowed for the U of O for two years in my college years, and I love this book.
I think the movie would have done better, following the idea of the book of having a narrator. The narrator was easily able to bounce between what was happening at the time (in the Great Depression), the history of rowing, and how the PNW was not part of it, Joe Rantz’s story, the form of rowing, and the story of George Pocock.
That would have been bad enough, but they literally changed the story 100 times from Sunday!
Joyce was high school girlfriend who followed Joe to UW, that was not their first year rowing.
To quote an earlier review, the script was lazy,
and shallow and the characters weren’t developed.
And don’t give me “ it’s hard to translate a book into a movie”, because they did it with Harry Potter 7 times and they freaking nailed it, every single time. And the later books were much bigger than this one.
If you aren’t going to do it right, don’t do it at all!
