Grace sacrificed or lost her true creative core. Her soul. Perhaps she became a little bit less herself in order to please her husband. He was not wild enough to marry and alchemize with Grace or even know what to do with that part of her that craved expression and transformation and truth. He could not hold that mad poetess in her. Or even fight for her. She gave it all to her married life-and got not more than a thin dull thump as a response.
The marriage did not feel real to her (and probably not to him) because she was not being real. It was a marriage of masks.
She was enraged and betrayed at the bad deal she had made. At least Edward had the honor and self-knowledge to leave so that they could stop the dance of pretense. Like many unaware, he married a disapproving version of his father and finally realized he just needed a woman who could accept him as he is.
Older and knowing himself more-he was able to see clearly. Edward did not know himself either and wasn’t full realized when they married. There is no bad guy here. Just a portrait of human development in the later phase of life.
I’m glad they split up. Now maybe they can both become real.
