An almost perfect movie whose intent fell a bit flat due to some weirdly sexualized shots and other small things that made me feel like the director might not be all on board with what might have been supposed to be a feminist take on one of the oldest stories. My partner told me partway through the movie that they’d heard it was possibly supposed to be an allegory for the birth of Jesus, so I understood sooner than I might have. But I feel my unfortunate Catholic youth allowed me to get it more than some people who haven’t been forced to endure Christianity against their will.
