OK, here's my 1 star review. I did give this movie a chance even after reading bad reviews. I paid full price to watch it in the theater with my family so my review is based on my perception of the movie and some confirmation bias (just trying to put it out there and be fair for whoever is reading this).
1) Movie is very boring and confusing. Kid's do not understand time dilation, why Pixar focused on a very complex subject like Relativity to explain the aging of Buzz' friends is beyond me. Like the majority of 1 star reviewers are asking, why was Tim Allen replaced? I like Chris Evans but his voice is too mellow and bland, we need Tim Allen's strong and macho heroic voice! Buzz' constant schtick of "make mistakes and learn from it" get's really old and annoying, he doesn't do anything cool and fun. SPOILER ALERT: making a parallel universe "old Buzz" as Zurg was ridiculous, again, kids do not understand time dilation and/or parallel universes. Good grief Pixar -_- (don't use parallel universes in the MCU as an excuse because those movies target teenagers and millenials, not small children).
2) The shoe-horned same sex scene was bothersome. Yeah yeah, some starbucks drinking high schooler in 90's era clothes or snobby west-coast liberal arts major in his $3,500 a month apartment will read this and get annoyed. Sorry not sorry, it was absolutely inappropriate for families with small children. "bUt iT's 2022, dEaL wItH iT", oh trust me when I say a lot of people have dealt with this forced culture for too long...push back is here.
3) The hacky band of misfits: I've seen at least 20 movies where the main protagonist inherits a squad of nobodies that do it a 1000 times better than Lightyear. In this movie they didn't gel together, were not funny, had awkward and forced dialogue... just plain bad.
4) The cat was cute and super funny, my daughter absolutely loved him! He was pretty much the entertainment that was the god awful snore fest that is this flick. This is more of what I expect of Pixar.
5) The gist of this movie is that Andy ( a mid 90's kid) was supposed to be so inspired by this movie that he was desperate for a Buzz Lightyear toy? Where and how was any of that inspiration there from this movie? I'm a 90's kid and I can tell you only two things would have intrigued me, Buzz' cool looking space ship and the cat...that's it. This movie is just a reflection of the overall problem with the current film industry, more on that in the next point.
6) This movie encapsulates Disney's new business model. Take old and successful legacy movies/characters (Buzz from Toy Story and Star Wars), add a dash of nostalgia, stir in some "mOdErNiSm", and you got yourself a ruined legacy character with guarantees of toy sales and a new venue/world for a Disney park.
