I went to see Opening Night on the day it was announced that it was closing two months early. This bombshell will lead some people to think that the show is terrible. It isn't; it's just on in the wrong place. The production is nothing like anything else in the West End. It experiments with new visual ideas and the story is challenging. However, I feel that theatre - and especially musicals - must evolve to survive and thrive. Otherwise, we'll still be watching the same old stuff in ten years time. Opening Night is disjointed in places and the video screen stopped me from fully immersing myself in the action on stage, but it showed me new ideas of what a musical can be. Oh, and Sheridan Smith is wonderful in it, as are her co-stars Shira Haas and Nicola Hughes. I'd recommend anyone to go and see it. Just don't expect a traditional musical.
