Let’s talk about the diversity in these characters! From socioeconomic background to ethnicity, this show was intentional with casting these characters to not be stereotypes, but instead have dimension. I loved that the most. The script is incredibly written to show the honest truth in what it’s like to be in poverty, sure, but also the reality of how your circumstances can be anchoring and preventing you to seek out new heights. Alex is diligent, responsible, stoic, and incredibly lonely throughout being the most sensible between her coworkers, mom, and ex. Even through her courage and plans to climb out of poverty for herself and daughter, she is met with resistance and obstacles beyond her control between her in denial mother, the government’s strict limits on aid, and her relentless ex.
It is not as simple as a capitalistic society claims to climb out and stay out of poverty. The truth is, people are born in less than fortunate environments that don’t set them up for success. This show inspired me to have more compassion and see the impacts of the wealth gap in our society
