such a great movie. The shock of the opening scene pulled me in instantly . The premise being based on the belief in other cultures that when a person dies in extreme rage a curse is born is so deep. Even just the setting of the movie. In Japan a very crowded city with a unique culture and the feeling as an American living there feeling disconnected by the language barrier made the feeling even scarier. The story it tells is so tragic and believable. I mean even the "grudge sound" through the phone is so iconic it's hard to find any faults with this movie. The only thing I can even remotely think of is that the back and fourth jumping in the storyline can be tricky to follow but if your engaged with the movie the whole time you won't have a problem understanding it. which is saying a lot for me a person who can get uninterested pretty quick watching a movie. I was so into this movie I needed to finish it right there. I just can't even understand people who rate this movie poorly. 10/10 instantly became a favorite.

disappointed to say the least. I was very excited to watch this movie but was very underwhelming. The best part of this movie is the soundtrack but everything else kinda falls short. I admit the reveal of the father being dead the whole time was a good twist but had lots of holes in the plot of it all. The look of the doll is good but then you get to the doll maker with the weird tongue thing. Just silly CGI ruining another movie that could have been big. It's worth a watch and you might really like it but personally I was left disappointed. 4/10

One thing that holds it from 5 stars... I was very impressed with this movie. I went into it not expecting anything and got proved very wrong. The whole retro sort of plot was very cool and seemed very immersive. All the actors were really good especially Nicholas Cage. I never have watched any of his movies before and I was blown away by his appearance and character he did. Sold the stereotype of the crazy creepy guy that you have to hide your children from. But this plot had lots of holes and they way they explained it was pretty lame. They should have stuck to the crime sort of horror than bringing in supernatural shit. I love supernatural movies but this wasn't supposed to be that and it felt like they shoe horned that in to explain the movies shortcomings. I really wish they didn't do that and came up with something else. They had so much material and just wasted it. I also would have liked to see more screentime on cage being the face of the movie but maybe seeing small quick shots of him built up suspense to the reveal of his arrest. Overall its a 7/10 movie for me but that "devil dollmaker" thing really took the punch out of it. Would definitely watch again.

This movie started out very strong but got significantly weaker and that "ending" completely ruined it. A lot of reviews focused on the "excessive gore" and actress performance. I actually think the main role killed it and did very well. To me lots of gore is fine if you can create fear in other elements without having to rely on lots of gore and jump scares. However it felt this movie mostly relied on that when it didn't have to. Some scenes Definitely created suspense and fear so I'm not sure why they thought a ton of CGI, gore, and jump scares needed to carry the film, it ended up ruining it. As for the ending I have no words. A lot of people found it scary, no disrespect to them but how cheesy giant CGI fake looking monsters scare you is beyond me. CGI monsters and goofy things like that ruin so many movies. CGI is a tool that has now become a crutch for so many movies that could have been 4 or 5 stars that just butcher it. The whole ending monster thing was just so big and fake it was stupid. They should have made the first movie and just left it alone. But money talks I guess and now they wanna make smile 3. Just leave it alone and work on new ideas.
