I bought the soundtrack to this movie years ago, never saw it. Loved the album, one of my favorites, but the movie...
It's set in 1977 (likely filmed then as well, since it came out in 1980) and portrays that era as well as can be expected. It stars Paul Simon as an "aging folk singer who has passed the peak of his popularity" and has to deal with competing against a younger, newer genre of music on top of his failing marriage.
I knew going in that it had gotten poor reviews (outside of Siskel and Ebert, who gave it two thumbs up, go figure🙄), but I so loved the album, how bad could it be? Well, lets just say there's a reason it was his only feature film. It was slow, plodding really and the acting was so so. The production quality was low as well and outside of the music, the film just wasn't all that interesting.
Oh well, I still love the album!
