As a huge fan of the original Until Dawn game, I went into this movie with an open mind and honestly, I really enjoyed it. A lot of people are criticizing it because it’s not a 1:1 remake of the game, but to me, that’s actually a strength, not a weakness. If it had been a direct copy, it would have felt stale and pointless. Why recreate every beat when you could just… play the game instead?
This movie was never marketed as a shot-for-shot adaptation. From the beginning, it was made clear that it would be a spin-off or a reimagining, set in the same universe but telling a new story. And I think it succeeds at that. It respects the world and spirit of the original game while giving fans something new to experience, which is exactly what a live-action adaptation should do.
In fact, this approach makes me even more excited about the potential for future adaptations. I’d love to see Sony greenlight more films based on The Dark Pictures Anthology or other games from Supermassive. There’s so much potential if they keep approaching these projects with creativity instead of just trying to recreate something that already exists perfectly as a game.
Bottom line: if you’re a true fan of Until Dawn and understand what made it special, give this movie a fair chance. It’s not here to replace the game, it’s here to expand the world we love.
