The original MTV five VJs’ story needed to be told exclusively from their perspectives. Their story deserved to be told from their perspectives. There could not have been a better way of doing so except in the interview format of the book.
Initially, I was put off with the format. It struck me as a bit trite. But, as I continued to read the book I got to relive my experience of the initial days and development of MTV just as much as I got to relive it from their perspectives. I got to relive my gradual disaffection with MTV and I got to understand why and how from the perspectives of the VJs themselves.
They were making it up as they went on. They were the faces of a new medium, which was defining itself on a day-to-day basis. The viewer got to participate in the evolution of this new medium. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be the four of them in 2023 knowing what they contributed to. Without the acknowledgment of this book, their contributions would be even less acknowledged.
They never really got the credit for the groundbreaking contribution they made. This books makes up for it, somewhat.
