A survival RPG done right.
Survival:
Enshrouded takes the most enjoyable parts of a survival game by incentivizing things like food, shelter, and water rather than making them a requirement to stay alive.
Craft/Building:
The harvest/crafting system makes sense and is easy to understand, with only a couple of issues (the undo last build action needs to go, and the rake seems utterly pointless). The building system is surprisingly robust with various materials and decorations (chairs, tables, lighting, shelves, doors, secret doors, walls, etc.)
RPG elements:
The RPG aspect has a nice blend of a skill web supported by a general upgrade in all areas as you upgrade your flame altars. The shroud areas can be challenging and add a unique feel to the game.
Combat:
Combat is fairly simple, but also enjoyable. With multiple armor sets, upgradable melee and ranged weapon choices, as well as short and long range magic options, there is plenty of variety without feeling like you are stuck using one or the other.
Terrain:
The terrain mechanics are top notch (get the grappling hook and glider ASAP, pick up the double jump skill, and always carry a pickaxe). There's a way to get everywhere in the game, and I haven't ran into a glitch no matter how high I pickaxe/jump/glide or how deep I mine/tunnel.
TL;DR:
With the right blend of Survival/Crafting/RPG, Enshrouded delivers an enjoyable game that is easy to spend hours and hours on. With plenty to explore, an engaging main story line, and several side quests, it's more than worth the $30 asking price to get early access.
