I can't help but wonder, was the climbing partner's fault that they hit an avalanche? In his solo climbs, he seemed so calculated, and technically flawless. I wondered if his alaskan partner was more clumsy, or careless.
You also wonder how much effect did two years of documentary filming affect him? The notoriety and filming had to have an impact, did it push him too far? Did it make him run off to find his yet again most exhilarating adventure? where exactly did he end up on that razor sharp edge?
It is admirable that the film makers caught and presented the best of his personality, the young man had a purity of soul and skill that only the mountain could contain. He was a true genius, and like many extreme athletes, took one turn too many, and now rests deep within the snowy bosom of his only master.
sometime in a thousand years, the glacier will spit him out, and he may be on display in a museum like Utzi, the Alpine man in Italy. I feel sorry for his mom and girlfriend.
