When I was a kid in the early 80s, I watched this and enjoyed it. But I remember having a lot of anxiety about the plot. I enjoyed the characters but it felt like the darkness of the storyline was a bit jarring to me at that age (about 7ish). As an adult, it feels like more of a cult classic than a children's classic. The plot is strange and underdeveloped for an adult watching it. It will probably give most small children anxiety, if not scare the bejeezus out of them. I grew up in a very traumatic household, so it wasn't that I was sheltered, it was just that I had enough anxiety and didn't need extra. That being said, I actually asked for the Return to Oz board game and loved playing it. (Anyone remember THAT one?) And the movie is campy and hilarious to me as an adult. Maybe just don't play it for your kids unless they like that sort of thing. Just don't be surprised if you feel like you're in some weird and whacky fever dream.
