A beautiful, heart-wrenching, hilarious movie. The negative criticisms come from people that I don't think fully understand the purpose of the film. Like how the film isn't encouraging sexism towards men it's more of a comedic way to put men in the shoes of women in the real world so that they can understand how women feel. Barbieland is to men that this world is to women, unfair, and by depicting the men as dumb accessories that are mistreated by Barbies, men are perhaps outraged or embarrassed at first until you flip the switch in your mind and realize that this fantasy is how actual living women have been treated by the patriarchy and it instantly develops a new meaning. As a man looking at it from that perspective was eye-opening and awakening. I love Ladybird so I expected nothing but the best from Mrs. Gerwig and she definitely delivered a satirically significant way to oppose the patriarchy.
