This show is more of an art than anything else. Indeed, the not-so-great IMDB rating is probably understandable given what the audience favourites's are these days. There's just too many awesome things about the show, but here are the stand-out points in my opinion.
1. The complete absence of cliffhangers. One of the most extensively used strategy in TV series is to end an episode with an obvious suspense(at times forceful) just to ensure viewership in the next episode. Well guess what? BCS(and even BB to a large extent) is almost devoid of this cheap thrill. An episode of 45 minutes feels pure, ingenuous and as often mentioned, story-telling. Contrary to many, one doesn't feel a dying need to see the next episode just for the suspense, and probably feels no different if watched after some gap. The entertainment provided demands a different perspective towards mundane activities and dare I say, even maturity.
2. Out of the many relationships, Chuck and Jimmy's brotherhood is just phenomenal. Yeah! The tensions, idiosyncarcies, and even brotherly love is provocative many times. A mesmerising moment for me was one the S5 episodes, where Chuck and Jimmy sing a duet. This scene is simply heart-melting. The seeming shy and prudish Chuck, unwillingly yet confidently grabs the mike and displays his singing skills, is out of the world for me. Who would have thought that such an established lawyer with a strong personality would manage to overshadow his little brother EVEN in singing, and applauded by the pub audience? Sigh!
3. The acting of all characters is impeccable to say the least. But, the portrayal of GRIEF in Mike's life and even in Stacey's life is mindblowing. Mostly, I get to see stuff where the grief of the loss of a loved one fades away quite conveniently, and it all gets back to happy-merry life at the end. But Mike could never actually get over with Matty's death, which reflects in his occasional outbursts. Similarly, in Stacey I could see a wife wounded by her lover's death , who gets on with her usual life but somehow the pain is apparent on her face. The keyword here is BALANCE I believe; not drowing the viewers with exaggerated emotion, yet a pain one can relate to.
(Could easily go on for a full thesis, probably in a future blog!. But that's all for now) :P
