It's always so amazing to me how people can have such differing opinions on things. I've watched other shows that I would not give a good rating to that others loved. Honestly, the poor rating on this series surprises me. I'll try to be brief, but there's a lot to unpack.
First, I never read the book, but I was curious about something. I embrace and accept diversity. If your choices aren't negatively impacting me, do what you want. However, I'm sick of having it shoved in my face when it's not necessary. I researched this: Brooke was not a lesbian in the book, so why did she have to be one in the series? And such a stereotypical one, bad hair, poor fashion sense with her tacky matching track suits. I took a star off just for that choice in plot line.
Now, acting. Is anyone going to win an award for this? Probably not, but consider something: if you end up feeling very strongly one way or the other about the character (in this case, I despised all of them), then are they not doing a really good job "acting"? Ironically, I thought the weakest performances in this were from the well known people (Bening and Neill).
For those of you who think this family dynamic is unrealistic, you either lived the exception to the rule or you're in denial. The scene where the whole family is present for the mom's confession about something......I thought to myself "Oh, yeah. There it is. That's all the crap this family has been keeping hidden and letting fester." Made me feel like I was at one of my family's holiday disasters. NO ONE in this family is likeable for different reasons: some of them are just not nice people (mom and dad----sorry, you can think mom is nice and mistreated, but she is a manipulative drama queen. Some of them are just super annoying (Amy and Brooke) , and some of them just make really bad choices which make them sleazy ( Troy and Brooke). You might think Logan is the exception, but he allows himself to be the family doormat and wants to never really grown up and live like an actual adult and make decisions for himself. Ironically, they act like filthy rich people, but it's obvious from their lifestyle that they aren't (other than Troy and that's money he earned).
The plot: I enjoyed it, but the big "twist" in the last episode is not really a surprise. Without giving too much away, there is another plot line that would have no reason to exist other than to explain this twist. That being said, there are a couple of smaller surprises at the end to explain that particular plot line in another way. I know, clear as mud. Honestly, I hated the ending and felt it was disingenuous.
If you like family dramas and/or murder mysteries, I'd give this a shot and not pay attention to the 2.9 star rating. It's worth more than that.
