The fact that the Japanese speak Japanese and the Americans speak English makes for a very realistic portrayal of this film. The film plays the leaders of each side against each other as both leaders experience the same kind of problems with their soldiers. The movie effectively portrays the futility of war.

This film has an exceptional script and very well developed characters. The three leads play off each other extremely well and interact expertly with the ensemble cast. Humphrey Bogart plays well against type, but Peter Ustinov steals the show with an over-the-top performance. Highly, highly recommend this movie.
