I can see both perspectives of those shitting on this movie and those praising it. If you are looking for closure, don't see this movie. If you are intrigued by slow burns and mystery /suspense, go see it. The plot makes no obvious connection and it has no closure. The acting is superb. It is very much like the closest metaphor of children and school shootings, in that there is no real conclusion to the story, life goes on, things do not get resolved, answers are not generated. A lot of things can be analyzed about the story that could pertain to; school shootings, abusive relationships within families, bullying, love and the things we do for it, drug abuse, and violence in general.
It is not a moviegoers film, a few good jump scares, hilarious moments, and superb acting, but it actively subverts any expectations, which most people going for a horror movie would find distasteful. It is more a film for film students and artists, which is why there is such a disconnect between critic ratings and audience ratings.
If you want to have a regular movie experience, DONT SEE THIS FILM.
But if you enjoy analyzing films and subtext, enjoy some gore and a good slow burn, you should enjoy it. I loved it because it kept me guessing, when I thought I had the metaphor and subtext pinpointed it pulled the rug from under me, which doesn't happen to me often at the movies
