Celeste is more of an experience and less of a game. It's difficulty is nice if you're into the idea of overcoming challenges by simply improving upon your skill.
I mainly used a keyboard when I played Celeste as I currently do not have access to a controller however, even with the supposed handicap of using a keyboard rather than a controller, the experience with jumping and platforming was still good but however, half the time I find myself failing at a platforming section I don't feel like it was because of my own skill.
The platforming sections are very tight and if you fail by even a pixel, you are punished by the game in a inconsistent manner. Sometimes a death may just be a small inconvenience and sometimes it may be a painful and draining.
An example of this off the top of my head is during one of the Badeline chase scenes where you are chased by multiple Badelines and each time you fail a section, you at least feel like you weren't very far haead as the section is very fast paced. I personally find that chase scene to by my favorite part of the game.
But. On another Badeline encounter, where you have to physically hit her with your sort of dash move, you could be taken so far back if you fail even once and have to go through the pain of having to perfectly dash into her. Over and over. It drags on, basically.
Now. If I were to rate Celeste based on its story alone, I personally find it would be deserving of a 4/5. I loved the small interactions between Madeline and Theo, I loved Madeline going past her anxiety and self doubt. I loved Madeline growing to be a better person when encountering Oshiro.
But the gameplay? Like I said, I find it good just very inconsistent with how the game punishes you for failing.
Overall, a good experience but i don't think i'll be gunning to play it again anytime soon.
