I have seen a lot of shows and I was recommended to watch this a whole lot. So I watched it to see whether it is as good as people say. In my humble opinion, the answer is not really. The first season was great and if each season had the same level of storytelling as the first season, the show would have been great. This although was not the case because it really started to fall apart. I didn't mind the separation that occurred for the second season but it seemed to contradict the moral the show had about friends. The third season was my personal favorite because I love when shows have badass villains (Chrollo and Hisoka), challenges and good story (Kurapika's story with the troupe). Up until this point the power of the antagonists had remained exactly the same across all three seasons (which is fine). The fourth season was decent; the story flow was mediocre (this cards were weird) and the villain wasn't too special (virgin version of Yoshikage Kira). Still at this point in time, the power cap hasn't been crossed (Hisoka was the goal). The fifth season was were this show really fell. We receive a new enemy (ANTS) that we don't like (killed side characters and mentor) . It really seemed as though the artist was on drugs when making the fifth part because not only was the story telling bad (not expected events because they don't fit the story) but some decisions were really out of place (ANTS good or bad). At this point, it seemed as though the answer would be exacting revenge through bloodshed ( Made sense because viewer is angy from frien die also the usual route taken in shows/animes). Then the authors give this enemy a heart and quite possibly a chance at redemption (ANTS like little girl maybe they not so bad also an uncommon but understandable end). This choice makes the viewer take back those angry feelings leading to a pacifistic end. Then the author decides NOPE, revenge is the only option and kills the enemies. This was a mistake because the viewer no longer felt the need for violence and made this end unsatisfactory. The authors attempted the create both a good and a bad ending to the same enemy which ruined the plot in that season. Another issue with that season was that the new enemies, far surpassed the previous ones, thusly increasing the power cap. What this does is make the viewer curious to see how this roadblock is possible to overcome but the problem is that it didn't matter how it would be overcome at that point. The climb in strength is not only unreasonable in terms of the story but also in satisfaction. That's why I thought that the story would take a pacifistic approach because the gap of power seemed to be too large to cross. I guess my expectations were too high. In any case the final ending was good but sour due to the previous season. One of my biggest gripes was that Kurapika was just forgotten or abandoned as a character because all we got to see were tidbits of his accomplishments which would have been far more interesting that just ANTS. The show is good when it starts but slowly crumbles. The ANTS season creates many plot holes and erases previous enemies because ANTS. No ships or very little fanservice is ok. Doesn't add anything special. The potential in this anime was great but was wasted by a condescending drug trip. Maybe it's just me, Maybe I mercy was never an option to begin with but the power scaling and the plot holes ruined it for me. Doesn't matter how sweet an anime may start, if the ending is sour and bitter then all of it might as well be sour and bitter. 5/10 had potential that got wasted. Till next review friends.
