In a book with a thousand characters, only about five are female, and most of them appear near the end of the book. All of the humans are white. The villan, a female governor, is ostensibly despised because she brought her dead son back to life in a clockwork body - she's conquered death! She deserves a Nobel prize! Instead, the entirety of Wildwood wages war against her. Representation matters. Inherent bias dismisses and demonizes non-white non-male characters and this is a flagrant example.
