The content of this show is 50% platform struggles (“Get your plate on the platform!” “If you can grab it you can take it.” “I got XXXX ingredient, I don’t know what I’m gonna do with this.”), 45% banter with ill attempts at having the audience care and relate to the contestants, and 5% actual footage of cooking. It’s a COOKING show and we barely see any cooking. It’s all tell, don’t show. Do the producers know that the correct formula is “show; don’t tell?” When the round begins, the judges go around asking each contestant what they’re making for the challenge and all they do is talk about what they’re GOING to make but never an edit to show what they ARE making, show HOW they’re making their dish…it’s pathetic. There’s nothing next level about this show.
It’s also a weird formula to have one of the judges to act as an “impartial” judge in the elimination challenge. It makes me question the integrity of the competition. Speaking of the elimination round, it’s SO awkward having the contestants stand around in the kitchen while their teammates are battling it out. When’s the last time you saw a kitchen with a bunch of chefs standing around? At least give them an observation room or seats so they’re not awkwardly standing about.
The only good thing about this show is that Gordon Ramsay is in it. That’s all this show has. If he wasn’t a part of this show then this show would have no legs to stand on.
Go watch Culinary Class Wars. That’s a cooking show that actually portrays cooking at the next level.
