One of the worst Disney classic remake ever.
This movie disrespects the original making by overly emphasizing modern propaganda such as 'female superiority' with unnecessary plot and dialogue. Mulan is a movie in itself conveys the unforeseen female's capability in the era where women's right is of no existence. Therefore is no need to forcefully play up this ideal.
-Bori Khan deliberately asking the emperor who is going to save him, obviously indicating the appearance of a non-conventional character (in this case, a non-male)
-Replacement of character like Mushu the dragon with a Phoenix
(a Chinese Mystical beast considered to be more as a female icon than that of a dragon)
-Appearance of a new yet awkward character 'the witch', constantly suggesting how female is belittled in the ancient era. The additional of this character destroys the balance of the movie and ruin the effect of gender perspective contrast later in the movie when Mulan exceeds expectation.
Other than that, this movie has included childish and unreal movie effects such as people turning into eagles, hordes running on vertical wall without support, people flying around defying the law of physics when the classic Disney version does the complete opposite.
Also, the iconic romance between Mulan and her male is excluded from the story simply due to the modern idea where a female having a romantic interest with a male superior is not favoured. This decision completely disrespect the innocence of the classic movie.
The chosen cast reflect the unsavory side of show biz. Cast chosen merely due to their popularity instead of their suitability.
-The emperor was meant to be old and graceful instead of being aggressive and down to earth like a soldier
-The general mentoring Mulan is suppose to be younger of age, slightly more innocent than Donnie Yang
-The three iconic soldier mate close to Mulan, these should strongly reflect their respective characteristic in the original movie, one is bald, big and tall like a sumo and love food, one is short, bearded and angry & one is thin and weak
-Mulan, there are more suitable actors than Liu Yi Fei. Liu has always portray an image that is graceful and goddess rather than being down to earth like Mulan.
Remakes should respect the original making and refrain from conveying any modern day ideals.
For example, beauty and the beast excel in the remake and truly respects the original story, character and virtue. Unlike the upcoming Disney Mermaid where the colour of actor who plays Ariel does not reflect one in memory. I agree black life does matter, but do not simply put a propaganda in an innocent movie. That would simply ruin it. Its like asking a white person to play Mulan and Chinese person to play princess and the frog. With such direction, we will soon have male playing female characters and human playing animal characters.
Last but not least, none of its classic and iconic musical moments where people remember by.
If one would like to make a movie purely about Mulan with no reference to Disney, that is perfectly fine. But to selective choose plot and scene and call it a Disney movie is unsavory and bad.
