Any 1-star review that says "this book is bad because there is no one way to live" was almost certainly posted by people who clearly didn't read this text. Montaigne was the very essence of The Enlightenment; he valued tolerance, understanding, pluralism, learning, essays, and above all, reason. He was also influenced by the ancient skeptics and Pyrrhonians, meaning that life, for Montaigne, was not about finding and dispensing dogmatic absolute truths; it was about seeking, questioning, and discovering. All while preserving and having respect for what others have learned.
Sarah Bakewell captures the essence, the spirit, and the very heart of Montaigne almost perfectly. There is much to learn from this book and Michel Eyquem de Montaigne. If nothing else, you'll at very least learn the folly and foolishness of posting reviews for something you've not read.
