There’s a collection of excellent performances at the heart of this film, and some deftly directed scenes by a very talented Kendrick, however the real fault lies in the screenplay. Kendrick does a lot with the more dramatic scenes, and she blows us out of the water with the seriously impressive TV studio sequences, but the writer must have believed the beginning and middle were far too dull as they decided to go with a non-linear narrative and as much moments of random violence as possible to build interest. Actually, they’ve misunderstood what’s genuinely great here - the tense, creepiness of the whole event and the stranger than fiction sensibility. Watchable, but unfortunately a misunderstood screenplay.
