I have to say that it's been a pleasure and a privilege to be working out the details of ways to teach music of the world's cultures--with 12 marvelous authors: Sarah Watts (Early Childhood), Amy Beegle and Christopher Roberts (Elementary Music Education), Karen Howard and Jamey Kelley (Secondary School Innovations), Mark Montemayor, Will J. Coppola, and Chris Mena (Instrumental Music), Sarah Bartolome (Choral Music), and Chee-Hoo Lum (School-Community Intersections). We've figured a way to give emphasis to learning-by-listening to so many of the world's oral-traditional musical styles and practices, and to make the connection of music to its cultural meaning. By merging ethnomusicological principles to pedagogical methods, we're accomplishing aims that are both multicultural and intercultural, and offering learning pathways that lead to musical and cultural understanding.
