Edith Wharton must be spinning in her grave. She wrote a story of two cultures and some varied and interesting characters. Why even call this The Buccaneers? It’s an exploitation of a classic work. The novel was used as a draw to this awful bit of fiction. Would anyone have watched this if it didn’t steal the title of a famous work of literature?
These new characters are whining, victims, entitled, brats. This makes a mockery of actual characters who were entitled certainly but also conflicted and evolving.
It’s so easy to see all of society’s flaws in hindsight. If you want to write about a woke society in England in the 19th century, then do that, but stop stealing great works of literature’s titles to do it. Or at least follow the story line.
It would have been much more interesting to show the struggles of women in an era in a more convincing way. Trying to imagine any of this dialogue and behavior in Victorian England is just absurd.
The only reason to watch this at all is for the beautiful scenery. I suggest watching on mute.
