First, seeing the play helps with translation onto the screen. Given that, it is not necessarily a one-to-one comparison with the stage, but an integration and improvement upon the Wizard of Oz (WOZ) franchise and alternate historical text related to the universe in which it resides. I'd say to enjoy it as a standalone portion of the saga of WOZ, and then consider it a nice franchise along the lines of what we've seen with both the Star Wars and Star Trek universes (especially the latter with the Kelvinverse). The music score mimics the play, and ends with a Part 1, fittingly. The movie did a good job with "show and not tell", which contributed to the length in order to pull in those who are not theatre aficionados. I appreciate the lack of fan-casting, as it stayed true to its Broadway roots while still bringing in and captivating a new generation into the basics of musical theatre. Overall, I felt myself drawn into the musical, and not even minding the almost 3 hours of storytelling. I look forward to Part 2 next year!
