An old-fashioned sort of book, full of improbabilities, with an intelligient and persistent heroine out of Austen or even Anne of Green Gables. For all that, an enjoyable, satisfying reading experience, in the way that the “classic” books I read as an adolescent could be — books that create an alternative world and provide just enough description to enable you to imagine the rest of it into life yourself.
