I just went to the ABBA voyage show today and it was a fun experience. ABBA is a band I grew up listening to in the 90s, because my dad would play their music constantly. Going in, I had read that they used avatars, but as I started watching the show I was convinced I was looking at real people on stage. They did a superb job with that. Amazing light effects as well, that were fully immersive and left me very impressed.
There were three things that were let downs, however.
1. The dance floor, which I had a ticket for, was too overcrowded. For such a pricey show, they need to reconsider the number of people they allow on the floor so that everyone feels comfortable and is able to enjoy themselves. The dance area is also flat and not sloped towards the stage, so very hard to see the stage if you're on the shorter side.
2. The inside of the arena was HOT, despite it being a very cold and rainy day in London. It was hard to breathe by the end of the show and I couldn't wait to get out. Not sure why a newly built venue has such poor air circulation.
3. And finally...the most disappointing thing was the use of futuristic animations that had nothing to do with ABBA or the 70s. These animations would be cool in other contexts, but they really took me out of the nostalgic experience that the band and its music gives.
