had to read this book for my english class and my friend and I stumbled across the reviews while looking for quotes so I thought i would leave my honest opinion.
that opinion is that this book is terrible. like flat out bad.
all of the characters and annoying in their own annoying ways. Marcus is absolutely insufferable. Darryl was cool but then they 'killed' him off after the first few chapters. the romance was forced and awkward. and most of all the book was so slow. it was obvious what the point of the story was in the first few chapters but I swear, Marcus was doing side quests the rest of the time. like sure, the whole Xnet thing makes sense but he literally forgot that his so called 'best friend' was killed (or so they thought) in the beginning. he is literally not brought up again until the last chapter. like hello??? if I thought my best friend was dead i'd be a total wreck; Marcus didn't really seem to care that much. he cared more about a bug in his computer than his 'dead' best friend. and then his girl Ange shows up and all they do is almost have sex. like what happened to the resistance and fighting for what is right? Marcus is supposed to be a smart guy but then he's running around with this girl instead of doing what the synopsis claims he's doing. and then we randomly find out that Van likes Marcus near the end. i'm not sure how anyone could like this guy because he yaps about computer stuff the whole novel, giving us quirky explanations for everything which got old fast. all of the female characters are one dimensional and flat out sterotipical. do better. most of all, it makes zero sense that Marcus becomes this symbol of the rebellion against the DHS, he was literally doing illegal stuff on the internet before the whole terrorist attack ??? was he not stealing school tests online and downloading information that he definitely shouldn't have, and then he was shocked that DHS thought he had something to do with it. he's a hacker who just so happens to be in the middle of a terrorist attack, is that not suspicious? but to Marcus's defense, why is DHS torturing literal highschool students for information? do they think their baddies for starving children? and Marcus should have just given it to them instead of acting like a smarty pants and getting himself into more trouble, does HE think he's a baddie for throwing lame insults and comebacks at them. (news flash! he's not.) I had to force myself to keep going, holding myself back from ripping it up and throwing it out my bedroom window down into the puddle of dirty rain water.
I give it two stars becasuse the only thing entertaining about the book was talking about how much I hate it
