I finally had the opportunity to see the 2021 remake of West Side Story and must say, that while I am quite nostalgic and adore the original film, I was mesmerized by this delightful remake.
The cast was simply a delight to watch on screen and I must nod to Spielberg’s re-staging of songs in a naturalistic flow (I want to be in America sung as they move throughout the city was brilliant). Rachel Zegler gave a wonderful performance as Maria and Ariana Debose was a fantastic Anita! I even loved the reimagining of Doc as Rita Moreno’s Valentina. While many people have given him flack, I must give props to to Ansel Elgort’s Tony…While some people said he was lack luster, I think he performed as the part was written: a guy with an inner struggle that is trying to navigate through the emotion of being truly in love, but not feeling worthy of it, all while trying to figure himself out after prison. I honestly thought he was earnestly charming and gave Tony a depth that was lacking in the original Tony (the eternal optimist with a plastered on grin that never read as a former gang member). I was mesmerized and couldn't keep my eyes off of him. He was believable as someone that had some inner turmoil that was balmed by his head over heels love for Maria. He was interesting. Intriguing. His voice as he sang Maria literally melted me.
Bravo to the cast! This was simply fantastic!
