I am now in my ninety-second year. I read this book after going on a cruise with Swans Hellenic in 1963. I thought it was by Michael Ventris, but now find it was written by a friend of his, John Chadwick, about his life and the way he deciphered Linear B. It was like reading a whodunit. Absolutely riveting. I could not put it down . I was not an academic, just a curious young woman, but it is a story which was worth telling and worth reading. I have never forgotten it and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone. It started me on a journey of discovery of the Greek classical writers and and has afforded me a great deal of pleasure over many decades. Ramona Venner
