A story about American colonialism in the islands of Hawaii which always came with the Christian missionaries. It is a thoughtful. beautiful film. Julie Andrews is lovely as Jerusha Bromley, and Max von Sydow is the dour, intense Reverend Abner Hale. It is films like this that press home a question. Is it the duty of America to infringe on other cultures just because we can? Or the worst excuse, "It's for their own good."
