Objectively, this is a bad show. And I love it.
It's written like a telenovela, and the accidents that they respond to are wildly overdramatic. They don't spend long enough on individual problems or storylines, and it's so ridiculously unrealistic. Austin is portrayed really poorly.
But! The characters and their relationships are portrayed in a way I can only describe as lovingly. The actors and actresses really put so much effort into their roles, and the characters and their arcs feel genuine, despite the unrealistic circumstances.
Objectively, the show is far from good. But I still find so much comfort and enjoyment in it, as so many others do. The cast is diverse, but it doesn't feel forced.
I put this in as a 5 star review because all the low reviews are from braindead people complaining about "leftist propoganda" and how "woke" the show is. 9-1-1 is, in my opinion, much worse than 9-1-1 Lone Star; sharing its flaws but not many of its positives; yet its reviews are higher simply because the diversity is portrayed in a way that is palatable to the pearl-clutching, close-minded right-wingers. I guess I shouldn't have expected any less, considering this show was aired on Fox, but it's still disheartening to see.
Speaking of which - TK and Carlos' relationship is sweet and pretty well-written. I saw a lot of complaints about the few explicit scenes between them, and to that I would like to point out that there are scenes that are just as graphic between straight couples. And, if you don't want your 8 year old to see sex on TV, maybe you should redirect them to a show designed for children, rather than expecting all shows to bleach themselves to be age-appropriate.
TK's arc with drug addiction and his relationship with his mother are two aspects I really enjoyed about his character. Paul is a black transgender man, and I like how his character and arc isn't focused on that - he is his own person.
One episode in, and I'm concerned about Season 4. The level of telenovela ridiculousness is rising, but I will hold onto hope.
In conclusion, 9-1-1 Lone Star has many flaws, but I still highly recommend it and very much enjoy it. The stories are compelling and the characters feel genuine despite their crazy situations. There are many touching and important storylines.
