I never watched any of the Speed Racer animations growing up. It wasn't ever in my little bubble / circle of friends that could have introduced me to the legend that is Speed Racer. I never really got introduced to any anime until my later years in life. Still, I thoroughly loved this movie.
The story telling within the first 20 minutes of the movie sets up the Racer Family dynamics, their relationships with eachother and builds up the tension that sets up this movie for the transition from the 2nd act to the 3rd where the relationship between Speed and Pops seems to come to the same tension stress points that nearly ripped the family apart when Rex made the same choices 8 years prior.
The opening of this movie always draws me into the Story of How much Speed loves his big brother Rex and how racing is his way of honoring and staying close to Rex.
The movie also catches the feel of the classic anime looks, colors, panels, and action of this CGI heavy movie.
But in my opinion the story still carries the movie while introducing a new audience to the feel of what an anime live action movie should feel like with it's artistic and direction.
I love this movie, and I hope that you will too.
