I read this book years ago before the internet, then went looking for it when all the great used book stores online came along. I still reread it every couple of years. It is science fiction, also mildly satirical in parts, and absolutely a cautionary tale. There are several (I think the description says 8) stories that are linked in that they all take place in a similar future, but each can be read individually. I really hate reviews that give away too much of a book before I have read it, so I am trying not to do that.
Imagine a future where robots are intelligent on their own and where dogs have one to do all the things dogs can't do because they don't walk upright or have opposable thumbs. And once they have them, what happens to the humans who have taken care of them and had a somewhat symbiotic relationship for all these millennia?
