even old-time Mortal Kombat fans will have trouble recognizing the main character in this movie or really caring about him when they do get to know him. without giving any great spoilers away the main character actually has some connection to a familiar face in the Mortal Kombat universe but does the movie do any service to this? no. does the movie Empower this main character who's stealing the light from other familiar and favorite characters, no. in fact he is whooped by a mediocre MMA amateur in the opening scene and then later I'm supposed to believe he can actually compete against powerful Mortal Kombat characters but oh wait he can't because in most of those instances he receives help and I don't remember the last Mortal Kombat I played where it was two on one. Kano is great comic relief but I feel like the jokes get old very quick and he obviously watches way too many movies because it's often a movie reference to his joke. the music is horrible and I find this particular to leave in bad taste because the Mortal Kombat theme song has very many good remixes and nothing of it is used except at the very end when you literally don't care about this tournament because you don't ever at once the entire movie feel like the Earth realm is under any sort of threat as it is supposed to be in the plot. some characters have zero personality such as Mileena and Goro. just a terribly done movie that could have been so much better with better writing and keeping the cast to a simple few familiar faces.
