Just finished the newest installment of JD Robb's In Death series. As a fan of the series who has read all the books, and re-read them, I have to say that this along with Secrets in Death, Connections in Death, Golden in Death, and Vendetta in Death were lacking. Since the pandemic, I started reading my old favorites from the series and noted a difference in tone, and the writing in the newer books. The biggest difference is the dialogue, some of it just didn't read clearly to me and didn't seem to fit the characters that I have grown to love. I know that characters evolve, but this wasn't the same. It was as if someone else was writing the books. Shadows in Death was well-written, but it too didn't share JD Robbs established tone. It was missing key players such as Peabody and McNabb. They popped up, no doubt, but Peabody should have been there from the jump since she's Eve's partner. I would be surprised to find out that a ghost writer wrote the last couple of books, because this just isn't JD Robb. What happened?
