Usually not a big fan of Roberts, whom I've always found to be a lightweight on screen, but in this role, she proves her acting chops...especially as her character becomes more and more nuanced. Impressive, as is Sean Penn. I had no idea he was playing John Mitchell -- and still can't believe it, so incredibly strong is his performance. Gordon Liddy scenes, especially in prison, are a bit -- well, more than a bit -- too much. A smart period political piece with contemporary humor and truisms for all time.
