I was expecting a fun filled, humourous, comic, feel good film with the occasional sad moment and a smattering of healthy moral lessons in keeping with the likes of Toy Story, Shrek etc. By contrast, this is a dark, sinister adaptation of the original with not much joy or happiness. It's a real shame because there was the opportunity to address this material in a very different way. I'm trying to appreciate what they attempted but the singular theme of this film misses the core values of the book with its wonderful characters and colourful story telling. I'd just watch the original film as that's better, with a stronger plot and characters. This hi-tech version looks beautiful but then writing is limited and the plot weak regardless of its adaptation. It's a missed opportunity to do so much more.
