I went in to IT chapter 2 with very high hopes as chapter 1 was a thrill ride of scares, humor and adventure. The child actors were absolutely superb so the bar was set very high and I knew this going in.
This is my take away from Chapter 2. Unlike other peoples opinions, while the first scene was graphic and violent with the beating of the gay couple at the bridge, my thought was that it would bring a gritty and dark set up for the rest of the story as you can feel the pure evil that exudes from the town of Derry in those first 20 minutes of the film. It was very brutal and hard to watch, however it made me think that we were in for a very gritty and dark twist in this second chapter, it made my heart beat faster and I was thinking...yep this is going to be a dark and scary ride. well.....i was WRONG. Honestly, this just wasn't a horror movie. I would call it more of a adventure film with comedy and science fiction rolled into with regards to the origin of Pennywise. The actors were ok, they brought what they could to the scenes, but i concur with other opinions that the script at times was weak and even campy. I was sorely disappointed in the Beverly adult character. The younger version of Beverly brought a strength and leadership to the Losers club that was refreshing and enjoyable. The Beverly of the second chapter was reduced to ill timed screams and stoic expressions that did not reflect the Beverly we loved in the first film. I really wanted to see more of her strength and grit shine through. While the adult cast looked remarkably like the younger cast, there was just a disconnect....the original chemistry is just not there save for the back and forth between RIchie and Eddie. Most of it seems forced and the only part of the movie where i felt like i wanted more was closer to the end when the pace picks up and we see a little more character development. And Pennywise...i am sorry to say ...he just isn't utilized in the right way in this film....i do agree that this is due to the heavy CGI effects. In the first chapter, the fear was much more palpable. It was just more believable. This time around...its just too predictable....you know exactly when the scare will be and while i get that Pennywise is a shape shifter...it just looks cartoony to me...The scares were few and far between. And the end.....there was some excellent potential but...it just falls flat..."spolier alert" ok so the losers basically denounce IT as anything more that just a clown and he shrinks down into this...melty clown baby thing and they reach into it and grab the heart and it just...i dont know...its almost funny. Pennywise is just this melty faced clown baby thing. I was just shaking my head...most people felt the 90's ending was bad....this was...i don't even know what to call this. My honest advice would be....don't go into it thinking its a horror film. Its more adventure, with some scares, comedy and science fiction sprinkled in,
