Pros:
1. Clarity — Dr. Kaufman does an excellent job of building upon and enriching Maslow's theories on human potential, in a clear and concise manner.
2. Practicality — Throughout the book, there are lists and questionnaires from scales that can help guide one’s introspective journey. The whole book really is an adventure within oneself, and Dr. Kaufman’s organization of each chapter helps foster a greater inner exploration.
3. Simplified depth — The chapter that captivated me the most was Chapter 5, "Love." What stands out to me in this chapter is Kaufman's exploration of 'B-love' (Being-love) and 'D-love' (Deficiency-love) (Maslow’s ‘B-needs and ‘D-needs’). Drawing on Erich Fromm's belief that enhancing our capacity to give love directly amplifies our ability to receive it. This perspective not only deepens our understanding of love but also connects us to a broader conversation about human connection and growth.
4. Use of visual aids — Throughout the book there are tables and diagrams which made me feel more engaged while reading. They also work as a visual shortcut, making it easier to comprehend and remember the nuanced ideas Dr. Kaufman presents.
Cons:
This con is highly subjective. I feel that this book does a beyond excellent job of breaking down and adding to the hierarchy of transcendence. However, it feels like something could be added in the ‘growth challenges’ chapter. Perhaps I was hoping to see something that would guide one to finding what tickles their empathy receptors and then being encouraged to follow that proclivity and see what turns up.
