This movie disappointed me by a LONG SHOT
The villain sucked. His motives just didn't interest me enough. The whole storyline about gru humiliating him made sense but it was just BORING.
I think they had a VERY good plot for this film. I was really excited to see gru and his family live that "double life." However it just fell REALLY FLAT. This aspect was what was really marketed in the trailors but to me it seemed like such a small aspect of the film.
One thing I pride the Despicable me franchise on is having jokes that the whole family can laugh at whether it be kids or adults. This movie didn't have any of the original pah-zass that the other movies did. I grinned a couple time but never laughed. The big pinnacle momment where gru and his son were supposed to "bond" made me feel empty. In other scenes it felt like they didn't know what to do with the characters so they just threw them in random places doing things that had nothing to do with the plot. It is almost as if they had a concept for the movie but it wasn't long enough to make into a film so they just started inserting filler.
I really wished they would've took more risks with the writing. Like why are the girls the exact same age for the last FOUR movies. They could've did so much more with them. In fact, their mannerisms make me think they're ever YOUNGER than the previous films. The gags and "funny moments" in the movie left me with a staight face. It felt like I was watching a really big ad for the movie but not the ACTUAL movie. When the ending credits played I dead said aloud " is that it" ??!! I was like theres no way.
I know its a kids film but it feels like they threw in the towel. The animation was sharp, music great. The color pallet was bright. From a technical perspective it was a good film. But something about it just did not do it for me at all. I don't know how this movie got cleared for the big screen. Im convinced that illumination needed pocket money to fund other endeavers so they lazily threw together another film. What a waste of time.
I have a billion other things to say about this film but my fingers are cramping. Anyways go see the movie and form your own opinion
