If you truly want to understand Structural Family Therapy I would recommend this book. Minuchin’s structural family theory. According to Minuchin (1974), the way family members communicate reflects their relational patterns and the structural dynamics of the family system. Open communication can build stronger connections, but it can also expose vulnerabilities in the system, particularly when boundaries are unclear or inconsistently enforced. When personal boundaries are not respected, it often creates tension, as family members may feel intruded upon or exposed. Overanalyzing sensitive topics can amplify these feelings, can often lead to defensiveness or withdrawal. Minuchin’s framework highlights the importance of clear and functional boundaries within the family system, as these boundaries help individuals maintain their sense of autonomy while still being part of the larger unit. Some of Minuchin's principles in practice is to clarify boundaries, identify rules and roles, and facilitate effective communication.
