Surprised no one has brought up the parallels with Sharp Objects, another conflicted female-led investigation--a journalist though--trying to solve a difficult case and bringing their past into some focus in the process. Both with complex lead characters portrayed in powerful performances which bring out the nuance of the character's psychological states.
