The name implies it'll be a Lovecraftian horror (where the horror builds in a certain way), but it doesn't. It's based on a book by Matt Ruff, who used the Lovecraft name in the title. The Third Day miniseries is closer to a Lovecraftian horror than this.
The actors quickly mumble through critical dialogue that is easy to miss without subtitles.
The main actress is easily outshined by secondary characters--like the sister, and is forgettable even within episodes that are dedicated to her.
The historical horror woven through makes me give it some stars because those are things not really taught in school but other than those depressing history lessons, it's not worth watching if you didn't read the book. It skims and skips through plots so quickly that it's easy to forget why they're doing something and many episodes had a Nickelodeon feel to them because things happen in such a ridiculous, fast way.
I kept watching because it had potential and my friends were into it, but it squandered that potential at every turn.
