I really love this movie. Love stories were popular back then. Love was talked about in movies, songs, everywhere! Plus, Billy Dee Williams was fine and Diana Ross was beautiful (all my opinion). I’m a sucker for a love story. Important note: Anthony Perkins does a really good job playing a diabolical and sleazy character. His acting was the best as he is a more seasoned actor.
Another note: Diana Ross played in Lady Sings the Blues before she played in Mahogany. I was more excited to see her play in Lady sings the blues. I cannot speak for all African Americans.
So, it is wise not to make affirmative statements when you have no idea (including myself) what all African American people felt about Mahogany. The movie wasn’t great, I can say the same for most love stories.
Thus, I liked the song, Do you know where your going to, just as much I liked the movie. The song brought the movie alive for me. A little insight on my American family. Everyone in our immediate family is high school educated!
My sisters and I have a bachelors degrees and family support. We were adolescents when this movie was made around 1974 and released in 1975. A lot has ‘changed’ for this African American woman.
Back to my points, I have married parents, siblings, and lived in a house. I had friends that were from single parent homes yet achieved the same as I did academically. I owe my own house and worked since I was 14.
Not everyone in my life had these blessings. When one writes about any group of people, please use words like some and DO not generalize.
Some black families have the similar experiences as mine. Some are different. Some have different values, cultures, and morals that set us apart from each other.
Finally, with all that said, I love the fact that this movie is a love story because I’m sucker for love stories!
